Makin’ some Noises… Off…

August 23, 2009 · 20 comments

This is a brief foray into video journalism, posted here for your amusement but actually created for an exciting new web site launching next month — ottawatonite.com

I am not affiliated with this production of Noises Off at all.  The show’s publicist invited me to the media call to help spread the word about the show, and I was happy to be able to go and to put this together.  If this video gives people a peek at the show and helps spread the word, everybody wins.  We owe it to ourselves to help each other this way — and as it happens, ottawatonite will be looking for savvy contributors who like helping people in this way.  Hint.

The video is not technically brilliant, but I think it holds up reasonably well considering I shot it all on a point-and-shoot Sony digital still camera (!).  I’m still learning.  One of the side benefits of my offering to do this kind of thing is that it teaches me a lot about video production: while editing this beast, for example, I spotted a few things I could have done while shooting that would have made my life easier.  All of it will help me with other work, down the road.

The total cost to me for putting this together: about three and half hours of my time (mostly in editing).  Imagine what I could do if I had equipment and skill…!  Imagine what you can do if you have only as much as I do… or less!

Great idea for promoting each other’s work, and getting the word out. I’d love to know what kinds of thoughts you had in the editing about other things you could have done in the shooting.

Well done, it’s a great promo.

I noticed that, too, when I looked at the footage. They supplied a DVD of the time-lapse stuff, and my guess is that Steve just got his family to help him do it one evening after rehearsal. I guess this means the set rotation is so simple that even a child can do it…?

This is really well done, though I lamented the disembodied head in the opening shot. I don’t believe this took you four hours top to bottom.

I may need to do this with the Flip I got for my birthday.
If only I knew some writers/directors/actors in Austin.

The head thing is cuz I was holding the camera at arms lengt in front of me and couldn’t see where the frame was… and the biggest part of the time commitment was in editing; partly because I had filmed about 25 minutes of footage that had to be whittled down to what I ended up with, and partly because I’m still figuring out the finer points of intercutting sound and footage in Final Cut. There are some great bits of the interview that I couldn’t use at all because I didn’t shoot them with large enough tails to be able to make good edits. Which sucks. Also, in Final Cut, you basically have to hand-craft all your own titles in a separate piece of software — it’s not nearly as turnkey as using iMovie.

This is great and timely. At first I thought the firing of the stage manager was just a great publicity stunt.

    hmm….

    guess it actually IS true.

    wow.

    This show will be awesome.

Great clip. Curious news. Not awkward; potentially, illuminating.
